HOW TO INSTALL A FUEL FILTER ON MOST VEHICLES

It’s always advisable to replace your fuel filter whenever replacing your fuel pump. There are multiple different designs of fuel filters out there, so be sure to use an appropriate tool when replacing them. Always make sure to bleed the pressure from the system. This can be done in multiple ways. One method is to remove the relay, start the vehicle, and allow the pressure to bleed off. Another method is to open the relief valve on the pressure gauge.

When removing a fuel filter with a shouldered nut, be sure to use a wrench to hold the fuel filter while removing the line. Unscrew the inlet and outlet fittings. It’s advisable to use a line wrench. Keep in mind that the fuel filter will have fuel in it that will drain out as you’re removing it. Always try to capture this fuel in an approved container.

First, you’ll notice there are safety retainers on each line. To remove them, insert a release tool into the end of the fuel line. Turn the fuel lines slightly to work them off. Then, remove the safety retainer on the inlet line and remove the fitting. Now, you can remove the fuel filter from its retaining bracket. Be sure to dispose of the old fuel filter properly.

Before reinstalling your filter, inspect your fuel line fittings to ensure they’re not damaged. Place the new filter in the bracket and reattach the inlet and outlet lines. On the fuel filter fittings, you’ll find a horseshoe-type clip. Some applications may require the use of this clip to install the fuel line. Note that the fuel filter fitting is marked with an “”end,”” and this should go towards the fuel tank.

Start by installing the fuel filter into the bracket from the front of the vehicle, spreading the bracket and sliding the filter in. Now, reinstall the fuel inlet line, push it on until you hear it click, and you can slightly pull back on it to ensure it’s fully seated. Reinstall the safety retainer. Finally, reinstall the outlet line, push it on until you hear it snap, and then reinstall the safety retainer.

Your new fuel filter is now installed. Anytime you have the fuel system open, it’s a good idea to cycle the key 2-3 times before cranking the vehicle over to purge the system of any air.
